Karen Topjian
Karen Topjian, ASID, CID, CAPS, CGP is the principal designer at HOME SPACES. She started designing over thirty years ago in NYC when she founded HOME SPACES’ parent company, MCM Designs, a professional design firm that focuses on interiors for clients with demanding lifestyles.
Karen’s work has included home designs for kitchens and baths, closet systems, living spaces and bedrooms as well as commercial spaces. Projects have been as small as a studio apartment to as large as an indoor pool house; from a corporate board room to a garage studio/office. But, regardless of the size, the requirements of the client and a creative solution are always paramount — as are the principles of good design: scale, balance, proportion and color.
One qualification that makes Karen a special interior designer is her extensive knowledge of the construction trades and her direct experience as a project manager for construction projects in Hoboken and New York City.
She is a Professional Member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID); a past president of the NJ Chapter of ASID; and a Certified Interior Designer in the State of New Jersey (NJCID #058). She is certified by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as an Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) and a Certified Green Professional (CGP). She holds membership in the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) and the Designers Lighting Forum.
Karen is the recipient of several awards, including the ASID Gold Award of Excellence, the ASID Bronze Award for Design Excellence and the NSPI Gold Design Award. She has been featured in Small Room Decorating and published in Luxury Pools, Design NJ, NewYork Spaces, 201 Magazine and Bergen Record. She has also served on the New Jersey Monthly’s Design Advisory Council. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland and has attended specialized courses at the New York School of Interior Design and The Pratt Institute.
